Simply Delightful Cakes

Another birthday has come and gone at our house! My four-year old daughter requested a cat cake for her birthday, when we had been planning for a Minnie Mouse cake.  She has been in love with "Baby Booties" and "Mama Booties" for quite some time now so I thought it would be fun to recreate her kitties for her cake. While there were many kitties to choose from, these were the lucky ones who made the cut. Spot, Lindy, Baby Booties, Mama Booties, Ta-tas, Whiskey, and Kiki. These little guys were so much fun to make, just a little time consuming! Shh....don't tell her that Zebra isn't a kittie! It's just a kittie with a mo-hawk! Hahaha!

My daughter's birthday has come and gone. May is such a busy month for me that I forgot to post her birthday last year, and this year I ran out of time as well. Two months later is bad, right?  Leading up to her birthday, all she wanted was a Minnie Mouse cake, but the day before I started to make it, she changed her mind and decided on princesses instead. With little time to spare, I threw together a Cinderella cake for her. She LOVED it, of course!

This past weekend I delivered a pretty princess cake for a young girl who loves Cinderella. Her mom sent me a handful of Cinderella cakes they both liked, and I did my best to combine all them into one cake. I especially love the bow...But I also love how the swirls came out, especially with the pearls! I didn't realize I assembled it a little catty-wompus until after the fact. It's so hard to tell how it'll sit until it's assembled! Aside from all the set-backs I had on this cake from the cake not coming out of the pan to the frosting melting to the pearls falling off in transport, I'm so glad it turned out mostly as planned! And then an hour after I delivered it, I fainted. I'd do it again in a heartbeat though!

My sweet little girl turned 1 today, so for the last few days, I've been busy in my kitchen baking, frosting, and molding her cake. With the exception of one cake, I've only made boy cakes. Do I have to say how exciting a girl cake can be after making so many boy cakes? ;)  I had been thinking for nights on end about what I wanted her cake to look like. When I was pregnant with her, I became hooked on owls, so I themed her room with a touch of owls. The only thing I knew I wanted on the cake was an owl. By this morning, I still didn't know what I wanted so I ended up just winging it. (No pun intended!)  With my little angel tugging at my ankles and my 4 year old sick on the couch, I think it turned out pretty darn good!

When I was asked to create this cake, I had never heard of Monster High before. I've come to the conclusion that they [the dolls] are the new Barbie. It's Mattel's new line of fashion dolls. Don't quote me, I could be wrong, after all, I'm a mom of boys... This is pretty much all I had to go off of. I tried to incorporate the stripes, though they didn't quite turn out as planned. I think I did the skull pretty well though! Happy Birthday Pam! I hope you like it!

I received a call to make this cake 48 hours in advance. Little Amaya loves the skull and crossbones and was delighted to have this as her cake! I was going to do the whole thing with fondant, but opted to try my hand at frosting. Turned out pretty good, especially after I tipped the mixing bowl onto it!
